My Top 8 Games of 1995

Note: Though no one knew it at the time, 1995 was the beginning of a major change in the video game industry. Once dominated by Nintendo and Sega, 1995 saw the release of the Sony PlayStation. Nintendo and Sega still dominated the conversation for much of the year, but change was coming.

Note (2): I realized today (11/13/2024) that the list I use to pull these games had placed Secret of Evermore in 1996 when it actually launched in the US in 1995. As a result, I initially omitted it from this list. I’ve now revised the list, placing Secret of Evermore in its proper place.

Honorable Mentions:
– Arcade: Marvel Super Heroes
– Sega Genesis / Super NES: Primal Rage, Spider-Man
– Sega Saturn / Sega CD: Panzer Dragoon, Lunar: Eternal Blue
– PlayStation: Gex, Rayman
– Super NES / Super Famicom: Breath of Fire II, C2: Judgment Clay, Earthbound, Secret of the Stars, Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand

8. Kirby’s Dream Land 2 (Gameboy)(Tie)
Building off of the original Gameboy title as well the NES classic, Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby’s Dream Land 2 offers excellent platforming levels along with an array of powers for Kirby to take advantage of. Complimenting these powers are three new animal friends that Kirby can ride, with each offering their own take on Kirby’s acquired power(s). Kirby’s Dream Land 2 is also compatible with the Super Gameboy adapter for the Super NES, meaning the title would have it’s own color scheme and border when played via said adapter.

8. Super Adventure Island 2 (Super NES)(Tie)
You can read more about this title in my previous two entries covering the Adventure Island franchise, but in summation, Super Adventure Island 2 throws out most of what you knew about the series in favor of gameplay more in line with the latter Wonder Boy titles. This title is far more open world than previous entries and sees Captain Higgins armed with a sword and sporting a suit of armor. Levels will need to be revisited (via an overworld map) as you find new abilities. I’m a fan of both the Adventure Island and Wonder Boy series, and this title pulls positive elements for both.

8. Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety (Super NES)(Sega Genesis)(Tie)
The sequel to Maximum Carnage had some big shoes to fill, and while Separation Anxiety falls short of its predecessor, it is still plenty of fun to play through, due in no small part to the fact that you can now pick to play as either Venom or Spider-Man, or play along with a friend, utilizing both. Separation Anxiety brings back the hero cameos from Maximum Carnage, but reduces the variety by a bit. While this is disappointing, an entirely new array of enemies shake things up. My brother and I spent countless joyful hours playing through this and beat it a number of times.

7. Mega Man 7 (Super NES)
Oddly enough, Mega Man 7 almost didn’t see the light of day. Finished in 1994, it was shelved in favor of the Mega Man X series, and was only released after backlash from fans of the series. This is made more baffling by the fact that Mega Man 7 received largely positive reviews. While it wasn’t compared favorably to the X series, it was compared favorably to previous entries in the Mega Man series. Mega Man 7 also includes numerous secrets to discover, including the Rush Adapter introduced in Mega Man 6, an upgrade that, in my opinion, completely changes the game for the better once it is acquired. Mega Man 7 is also the first time Bass and Treble are seen in the series.

6. Castlevania: Dracula X (Super NES)
Dracula X for the Super NES is an odd title. While not a direct port of the TurboGrafx-16 title, Rondo of Blood, it does share some levels and has a near identical plot. It doesn’t include all of the levels from Rondo, but does add levels that are new to Dracula X. This was done due to the limitation of the Super NES compared to the TG-16 as well as licensing agreements involving Rondo of Blood. While Dracula X is an enjoyable title, I’ve never felt that the controls were as tight as they could have been, and some of the level design left me cold. Still, this is a traditional, level based Castlevania title, and it does play as such. Even with a few shortcomings, it is well worth your time to give it a chance, especially if you’ve never had the opportunity to do so before.

5. Chrono Trigger (Super NES)
Let’s get this out of the way right here. While I genuinely like this game, I never got out of it what many others have. I’ve never been sure why given my love of this genre. It may be due to the fact that I didn’t get to play this until it was re-released on the PlayStation some years later. Regardless, this is yet another classic RPG on the Super NES. Plot heavy with many numerous characters, Chrono Triggers sees you jumping through time to stop an upcoming calamity. Chrono Trigger is unique in that, at a certain point, you are able to challenge the final boss at a time of your choosing, allowing for a dozen different endings. Chrono Trigger remains a popular game even today, and is one I should truly revisit myself.

4. Addams Family Values (Super NES)
If you’ve been following my blog journey through the years, then you know I’ll occasionally pick a game that most people would never mention. For 1995, this is that title. While most people probably considered this a cash-in on the movie, a write-up in Nintendo Power convinced me to try this game, and it is far better than it has any right to be. While the plot of the game is similar to the film, it is vastly expanded upon. Addams Family Values tasks you, as Uncle Fester, with tracking down baby Pubert, who is being held somewhere on the Addams estate by Debbie Jelinsky. Addams Family Values plays almost identically to A Link to the Past, with a vast overworld, multiple “dungeons,” numerous items to find, and secrets aplenty. Truly, the only downside of this game is the use of a password system, given to you by a family member that is not always easily found. In the age of emulation and save states, this has become a moot point (even when using the original cart on a system such as the Retron5).

3. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (Super NES)
With Yoshi’s Island, Nintendo showed that they were not afraid to play with their most famous franchise. Instead of simply offering a direct gameplay sequel to Super Mario World, Yoshi’s Island instead puts you in the role of one of a number of Yoshis, trying to get Baby Mario to an imprisoned Baby Luigi, who is being held by Kamek and Baby Bowser. Yoshi’s Island is wildly imaginative in its level design, and uses a pastel and chalk aesthetic that have allowed the visuals to age extremely well. While I don’t prefer this title to Super Mario World (though it seems most gamers do), it is still an excellent game with ageless level design.

2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest (Super NES)
As good as Donkey Kong Country is, I think that Diddy’s Kong Quest is actually a superior experience. In this title, Donkey Kong has been captured and it is up to Diddy and Dixie Kong to rescue him. Diddy and Dixie play very similarly. Both are small, quick, and extremely agile. The primary (and maybe only) difference is that Dixie can float down slowly by spinning her hair, a lifesaver in a game with some very tight platforming sections. DKC 2 adds a few new gimmicks to the levels while pulling some from DKC. It also brings back the animal crates that were so crucial to surviving in DKC. It takes true genius to top Nintendo’s in-house games, and Rare was up to the challenge with DKC 2.

1. Secret or Evermore (Super NES)
I’ve written about this game a couple of times now because it is a game I adore. I originally purchased Evermore because I came across it for $20.00 at Wal-Mart and it looked intriguing. I had no clue at the time that I was buying a game that I would complete numerous times and would still go back to play nearly thirty years later. Evermore is an action RPG title that plays much like Secret of Mana, though I feel that Evermore controls a bit better. You, as the main character, along with your dog (also controllable) are pulled into a fantasy world by an odd machine you encounter in an abandoned mansion. After initially landing at a space station, you are ejected to a jungle area and are off to determine what has happened to you and to find a way to return to your own land. Evermore is a sprawling game that sends you through multiple themed areas. Weapons, items, and magic (called Alchemy in Evermore) are all present, as you would expect of a game in this genre. I love this game. Again, it’s one of those games that I come back to every couple of years because it gives me joy in a way that many games can’t. Anytime I can put a spotlight on it anywhere, I jump at the chance, and I’m happy to do so here (again) by making it my #1 game of 1995.

Crazy Taxi 2

Hitmaker/Sega 2001

5/5

08/01/2001

Hitmaker made up its second game that exclusive to Dreamcast (Craxi Taxi One went to PS2 remember.) From the first Crazy Taxi to Crazy Taxi 2, the game stayed the same. Thats a good thing because the prequel was the most played arcade ports released in the present in the United States. What made Crazy Taxi 2 so playable is that the cusomer’s yelled at you for alease anything you did wrong like they weren’t stupid. If you messed up they tell you that. Like “Fool you almost killed me! — Bring me the to Burger King.” The second addition to the series takes 4 new cab drivers in New York City. The new game plays songs from the band Offspring and tends to be more “slangish.” But over all the game is the same fun picking people up with 2 new maps to drive around in.

The good. – Improved Graphic quality, “the crazy jump”, how realistic people in the game talk – hehehe; Some of the sound track (rather it be the non-vocal version of Offspring.

The bad – the adult language – don’t need to hear that much while I’m driving.

Sonic Adventure 2

Sonic Team 2001

5/5

07/01/2001 v1.0

I played this game for a while and the graphics are really good. Its like a step down from the Playstation 2. Every character has a darker effect to it and the game plays modern music like for Knuckles, its rap in Pumpkin Canyon. The game has game play like the original but is has more pre-rendered cut scenes and huge levels that make but for the adventure style game in Sonic Adventure. Sonic is one of those “want to be cool” characters, he’s not quite there. Unlike the original the script is a little more realistic, characters tend to interrupt each other. The game is pretty long. Also you can play separate levels for your pleasure.

One other thing I like is that you get to interact with your chaos like a pet in the game. You can pet it, feed it, enter it in a race, scold it you can do a lot of things with a chaos.

The good: huge levels to race down; Sonic, beautiful textures; the way the game has the feeling that its trying to be cool without over doing it, positively; chaos interacting.

The bad: voice acting; memory card usage

Air Force Delta

Konami 1999

3/5

07/01/2001 v 1.0

This game is a fighter pilot game. The game stands but, even though it was made by Konami. The backgrounds are smooth and the game has good frame-rate. The graphics in the game are reasonably good. The lock-on system works like a charm and stalling is realistic. (Always increase your speed when turning, I killed myself that other way. 😉 Normal mode is kind of easy expect when you get half way through, then it’s a little tricky to master. The game has hard too. Which is extremely hard. In this game I like to beat it once and play the missions independently. Each mission lasts for 10 minutes on average. I would recommended it.

The good: being able to be one; cold war effect

The bad: graphics could be a little better; wrong soundtrack; stalling

Crazy Taxi

Hit maker 2000

4/5

07/01/2001 v 1.0

Crazy Taxi came from the Arcade. The game is attractive. Your in a taxi cab and you race around with customers and drive them to there destination as quick as possible. The game recognizable vechals that exists. The best invention of the Dreamcast is the idea of the driving triggers. Right trigger for driving, left to brake, best idea since the joystick, I think. Even though the game has 2 cities to play, the game is perfect for the impatient gamer, which is me.

The good: crashing into cars, having the passenger getting mad and jumping out; originality

The bad: only 2 levels

Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Capcom 2000

5/5

07/01/2001 v1.0

Would you ever believe that the Umbrella Corporation (zombie creators) was developed by a 10 yr old genius whose name is Veronica? Never would of guessed it. If you haven’t heard, Resident Evil is a respected horror pre-rendered game made by those dudes at Capcom. The game is not for the inpatient gamer, it requires thinking and backtracking and shooting zombies. You be mature to play game, ok.  There is a lot of blood and guts in this game so don’t leave this game in the DC for your 6 year old to find out. But its fun for 17 years olds if your parents don’t care. The game is very, very long. I bad, I never got through the first disc and been playing the darn thing for 3 months.  Over all the game play is good with the exception when you walk the character through a still screen. Highly recommended.

The good: Shooting stuff; power ups; cut scenes; knowing what to do

The bad: The fact that Capcom hasn’t came up with it earlier.

Soul Caliber

Namco 1999

5/5

07/01/2001 v.1.0

Awesome fighter. The game is based on anime characters, laugh out loud man. The game has many characters to chose from, I think the women are cute. The game hands down, has the best combat system of any fighting game, ever. The left trigger is always block. The AI can be extremely good. Its not eh you hit me I’m dead, it competes with how well you play the game – and averages out the difference. The game itself is based on the Arcade by Namco. It’s so good that Namco is putting it in its own franchise.  It was also had the best graphics of 1999.  It is also a highly recommend game for Dreamcast.

The good: cute characters, great combat system; awesome music; realistic sound effects; very strong game play

The bad: Wasn’t released on a later system also.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape

Uri Soft France 2000

4/5

07/01/2001

Rayman 2 is a 3D sequel to Rayman. Good game. In the game you play a character with no arms or legs this a head, stomach and feet. The game has cool characters, that you would see in Super Mario or Banjo and Kazooie for the Nintendo 64. The game is kinda hard to beat. It requires a lot of climbing, running and shooting on Raymans part. One thing about this game is that Uri Soft totally redesigned the game for the Dreamcast, at the time the console had the best lighting effects around. The game has solid gameplay and a solid story. I like it. There are times when the game gets way to childish though, but you kinda respect that in a way.

The good: huge levels, good graphics, solid gameplay; clean textures; not too long, but not short by all means.

The bad:sometimes the level gets harder in the middle and if you quit you start all over with that level. If you don’t have a memory card I would feel sorry for yeah.

Daytona USA for Dreamcast

Gecki /Hasbro Interactive 2001

4/5

07/01/2001

The game is a remake of the arcade released back in 1994. Daytona USA is well designed. The game has three times as more tracks to race then Saturn. The game includes an enhanced music of Daytona and Gonna ride. Hasbro makes the cars longer. The game highly resembles the original that leads up to this day of age.  The game is not based on drifts but when to brake and when to accelerate. My favorite track is Ryn Ryn Rank. Also not seen in the Saturn version is a full replay that looks like Electronic Arts Nascar series. Over all I think the game since its all been seen before, would not be the best buy, but a enjoyable remake of an arcade classic.

The good: more levels; good gameplay; Nascar on Dreamcast; good AI

The bad:  too futuristic for its own good.

Resident Evil 2

Capcom 1997, 2000

4/5

07/01/2001

A game that comes very close to Code Veronica. The game takes place where the last one took off in Raccoon city. In 1997 Sega had a debate whether to bring the sequel to the Saturn, even though I own both consoles, I’m glad they didn’t. It’s a very good game. The game has noticeable improvements from the Playstation game. Like all the Resident Evil games you backtrack, shoot zombies. But what make it so good was some people thought that the game was kind of past stuff until Sega released it. In the game you try to find a way out of the Raccoon city which was developed by the Umbrella Corp because they were already there. You play James who meets up with Claire who has her own game in Code Veronica. Any way, they split up and meet each other discovering what’s left of the Umbrella’s attack force that as sent to destroy all the evidence. James who is a STARS member is located in Raccoon City.  And that’s what the entire game is basically about. Its fun though. This is also a recommended game

The good:Capcom did an exceptional job of porting RE2. Improvements over Playstation version like camera angles; shooting zombies

The bad: Capcom didn’t add to the story; trying to walk on a still screen. Dieing.

Test Drive: Le Mans

Infrogrames 2000

5/5

07/01/2001

Driving is really realistic. Graphics are comparable to those of PS2.  Le Mans has 4 large tracks that take you 5 miles around for each one. The game has a loading time but also has smooth frame rate. The cars include Chrysler, BMW, Duncan International, and some other man made racing cars. The replay timing and angles are real time angles. The controls are that you use A and X for gearing up and down and L and R triggers for acceleration and braking.   Overall the game is ultra cool. But is best when there are 2 players one on one. Overall the game his one of the best lighting effects on the Dreamcast that pushes the hardware to the limit.

The good: Le Mans car series, ghost mode, replay, solid controls, long detailed tracks, auto body customization.

The bad: graphics are starting to be outdated, freezing, loading time.

F355 Challenge

Acclaim 2000

4½ / 5

07/01/2001

This is also a really good racing game if you like realism. The entire game has Ferrari tracks. The game has good lighting effects, not as good as Le Mans but pretty close. The game has solid game play where you have to either gear down or brake hard and lose your place out of 5. The game has 5 tracks plus 4 secret tracks that aren’t that small. With all the handicaps off like power everything, the driving can be extremely hard for the average gamer, me. Sound tracks have rock on them. I don’t mind it though, its like Harley Davidson music.

The good:  car actually loses its place when you slow down, awesome music and graphics. Good game-play

The bad:    sometime freezes

Aero Wings 2: Air Strike

CRI 2000

3/5

07/02/2001

If you take the three flight simulators on the Dreamcast, AW2 would be your best pick. The game has combat and stunt flights. Even though you don’t get to chose as many planes as in Air Force Delta, you’ll find that this game doesn’t need all those speedy planes to past. The game play equals that of Air Force Delta since the prequel wasn’t that good.  It has a fairly descent 2-player mode that you and your friends to dogfight. You can do barrel rolls and back loops to out smart the enemy. In this game if you make that small error it could cost you the game. There is a training mode on how to plan and maneuver your plane. Over all its what is expected from a flight simulation, I liked it, even though it isn’t to be played all the time. Good Control, realistic altitude conditions, and smart enemies.

The good:  most realistic fighter on the Dreamcast; maneuver capacities not seen on any other game

The bad:    takes time to know what to do; a little difficult

Speed Devils

Uri Soft 1999

4/5

07/02/2001

Speed Devils is one of the best racing game of any of the launch titles besides maybe Sega Rally 2. The game is based on hot rod racing. Each car has a different feel to it, some looser then others. The game itself has a unique feel to it as you go through Area 51, Hollywood, Canada, Oklahoma , places like that. There is options that let you make it a timed race. In each race there are about 2 or 3 shortcuts each boo bee trapped. In the game there are also power ups like better acceleration or speed, all terrain tires. Overall the game design is an A but it takes an experienced player to make it through.  The game isn’t as commanding as F355 Challenge and Le-Mans. The game is fun to play for your spare 10 minutes. But if you play more then that you may get a little tired of it.

The good:   the street racing part of it, many options.

The bad:     if your behind you’ll never take 1st, and if you push it, it usually means bad luck for you.

Skies of Arcadia

Overworks 2000

4/5

07/02/2001

This is the Final Fantasy of Dreamcast, the Role Playing Game. The game is very long and spreads across 2 discs. The game is based on fantasy tale where a young girl gets stole by the Empress Arcadia and two rouges go after her and there friends that have mean caught hiding on an island by the Royal army. Cool eh. The 2 rouges eventually save there family that was captured and they eventually take over the empire, I think. The combat system is pretty well organized since RPGs’ aren’t Sega’s specialty. The game is in 3rdperson. But when this game isn’t the only RPG around, it tends to be un welcomed and sat aside.  But the backgrounds are well oriented and gameplay is very good, in the future this game would be a gem to have.

The good: good artwork, story, battle system, made for the teenage gamer; the choose system (one decision can change the way people view you)

The Bad:  single player; the need to continually save the game, if you don’t have the health you might as well start all over because it wont matter.

Street Fighter Alpha 3

Capcom 1999, 2000

5/5

07/02/2001

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the better 2D fighting game, at least its very good. What makes it so good is that it has the screens move you in the game and not this put you there like your actually after world conquest. The baron  and the rye and jo are back to kick butt. The animations are fluid as any other fighter. The game has over 20 locations and 40 characters most of them are lock into the game. Like all Capcom fighters, there are no blood and lots of anime characters. In my option the game is the longest worked on fighter by Capcom on Dreamcast. The game is very detailed and has moving backgrounds, instantaneously. This game is defiantly one to own.

The good: fluid motions, there is a point to the game; good everything

The bad: graphics outdated

Dead or Alive 2

Tecmo Games 2000

4/5

07/02/2001

This is a very unique game since it the characters are pretty life like. Its also the only game that Tecmo produces. The music in the game is based on Japanese rock, I guess. Every time is in Japanese. What makes this game stand out is that the characters have totally different ways of fighting. One might do a body slam wrestling (what Japanese think of us Americans) and another may be doing judo. One of the character’s breasts jiggle a bit, I find that interesting. Any way the moves are basic enough, though there are combos when you are near your competer. Like Soul Caliber it has the right stuff to be a 3D Fighter. One plus is that you get to through characters of edges. That’s fun. What isn’t fun is when you get thrown off. The game has every thing that other 3D fighters have. Survival, VS mode, Arcade, Team Match, and some others I don’t know on top of my head. Even though Soul Caliber is the bomb, DOA2 is a welcome addition to my library.

The good: Great Graphics; woman; solid fighting; beating the boss with wings

The bad: spoke in Japanese; ugly defense system for amateurs

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

Neversoft/Crave 2000

4/5

07/02/2001

I hear that a lot of people like this game, but I not really interested in it even though I own it. Basicly you have the top skaters in the world jumping the ramps, riding rails, doing 360s and 580s and ‘side airs’ which made the game really popular. The game is fine, it has solid graphics and control but your on a skate board all the time. And have you  even ran away from Officer Dick. He skateboards too you know.  The game has goals that are challenging but you can avoid it, that’s a good thing.  The game is solid in every way, but I this don’t like skating. But if you like skating, this is the game to buy.

The good: realistic courses; very solid game play; challenging but avoidable requirements

The bad: in my option I’m not a stake board fan, and I think that the game is over rated a bit.

Hydro Thunder

Midway 1999

3/5

07/03/2001

The Dreamcast title Hydro Thunder has everything from the arcade plus 4 bonus tracks and 4 hovercrafts. What made the arcade title so fun was that Midway didn’t waste any energy making this really fast. The game has power ups to gain position.  Each race lasts 3 to 4 minutes. Each vehicle has tighter or looser steering which is made up with faster speeds. On your first time playing you’ll may get 4th or 5thplace because some of the power ups are hidden and need to play a few times to find where they are.  Each time you place gold in each stage (beginner, medium, hard) you will receive a new environment and vehicle. Over all this game is fun to play a couple times but you might get tired of it if  you play it all the time. It’s good for a 10 or 20 minute game.

The good: good pace racer, the arcade sounds, decent AI

The bad: sometime freezes after 3 or 4 races.

F1 World Championship

Videogames 2000

4/5

07/03/2001

If you want a good all around Indy car game, this one would be it.  I played it, it is very good. One reason is that the game uses real Formula One tracks across the world. The game has a good AI, that will leave you in the dust if your not careful. Braking and then accelerating after turns in by far the most important. As you slow up the car becomes easier to handle this like the real thing. That’s the best. One drawback that the game has is that the backgrounds could be a little sharper, but the game for what it is has a stable frame rate. The game runs after the 1998 season and comes with over 20 vehicles and 40 drivers. And also every F1 track internationally.   The champions mode lets you play the whole season in order, one that I haven’t tried before. Over all the F1 World Championship is a very ‘slick’ racer.

The good: Tight control, many tracks, options for power braking and acceleration, nice intro, fans cheering, decent music, good frame rate.

The bad:    saving is questionable

My Retail history

When I was 10 years old, I went into Mall of America a lot and that was Barnes and Noble, Funcoland, The Gap, Camp Snoopy mainly as elementary school field trips, and trips with David Hartmon, my cousin. So I found some old Windows 95 and MS-DOS disks at Walmart and Target. I used to buy Kings Quest, Simcity 2000, Secret of Monkey's Island. I rented some VHS from Mr. Movies in Hudson, Wisconsin and the local VHS renter in Roberts, Wisconsin. I had Pizza at Carbones pizza in Hudson. I used to go to the Toys R US in Woodbury. I biked around the block to the Holiday gas station (before Circle K) that was my first job. I always cooked food at home from County Market grocery store.

Then I found some Super Nintendo games at Toys R US. I was into Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Sega Genesis, playstation, playstation 2, nintendo entertainment system. I also went to Funcoland and just bought lots of Japanese videogames, because thats what was displayed on the shelves and on posters or advertisements. I bought a lot of used games, because it was cheaper. I remember Nintendo 64 games costing $70 at Walmart. I used to eat at Applebees.

Then Mr. Movies closed in the 2000s. I didn’t go to Blockbuster. Later, it had DVDs, but I used to go there for VHS more. I bought all the DVDs at Best Buy, Walmart and Target. I didn’t ask the customer service. The insane thing is the manager of Best buy wanted to look at my stuff. Marxist-Leninist managers look at our stuff. The managers pick on us people with receipts and bags, not the gangster. Anyhow, Best Buy and Walmart is corrupted as all fuck now. Artificial intelligence scanning faces.

I used to go to the Gamestop and toyriffic and give them JPEG dvds, but nobody gave a damn about me and my hobbies. I had my cousin penny since 2014, but no girlfriends for 30 years. I was going to stores alone for 38 years. No phone numbers.

I used the SEO on websites, because nobody gave a damn about me for 10 years into adult hood, because of course they didn’t. At one time, I had X-Fire messenger before it went bankrupt for online multiplayer and chat. X-Fire messenger went bankrupt, and then there was outrageous fees attached to online multiplayer since 2012. I used it for Diablo 2, Guild Wars, Dungeon Siege, Neverwinter Nights, Unreal Tournament, Return to Castle Wolfenstine, Quake 3 Arena, Far Cry, Unreal Tournament 2004,

So in 2024, there was no girlfriends for 40 years and the stores cameras scan your face and its like communism when you’re trying to meet people (you can’t) This Wisconsin and Minnesota sucks for people disabled. Every store has a security camera with audio. I was at the dork den, and there was no fucking way I could get friends there. No fucking way. The store was a money grab 100% probably for its entire existence. Same with the comic book store, had security camera with audio, money grab, no friends, no snapchat. No instagram. Insane social polices. And the Democratic Party wants to be voted in as a Marxist-Leninist party so I have no fucking life what so ever or what’s left of my life. Motherfucker politicians..

Retro Console Wars – The Sega Saturn vs DreamCast?

Console Wars: The Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast were two machines that enjoyed as many similarities as they did stark differences. One system marked the end of the 90s gaming era, and the other ushered in the much-heralded 6th-generation of consoles that defined the new millennium.

And while both were manufactured by Sega, both were also responsible for hastening that company’s demise. But despite being regarded as failures at the time, their reputations have only improved in the intervening years. A Reddit thread on the subject of the Sega Dreamcast was a veritable love-in, and some Sega Saturn games, like “Panzer Dragoon Saga,” are so in-demand that they fetch hundreds of dollars on the retro game market.

This all begs the question, which is the better machine? Like anything, much of it depends on personal preference. But here’s how the two systems stack up according to certain criteria important to gamers young and old.

The Games: Dreamcast vs Sega Saturn

Both consoles score highly among fans when ranked solely by their respective games’ library. Each had their own strengths: the Saturn had some iconic and fun arcade ports like “Virtua Fighter 2”, “King of Fighters”,  “Sega Rally”, and “Street Fighter,” to name a few.

While the Sega Dreamcast had its own excellent titles like “Power Stone”, “Shenmue”, “Jet Set Radio” and “Soul Calibur” as well as wildly popular exclusive titles like “Crazy Taxi.” How can I forget playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the dreamcast, which is a great fighting game and probably the best arcade port of the game.

The Shmups / Shooters:

Radiant SilvergunWhile both consoles featured rail shooters, like The House of the Dead, which first came out on the Sega Saturn and The House of the Dead 2 on the Sega DreamCast.  Both consoles featured some real good shmups, the Saturn had a few that really stick out like Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga, Dodonpachi, and the list goes on.  Sure, the DreamCast had some cool shmups that come to mind: Bangai-O, GunBird 2 the GigaWing Series.

The Sonic the Hedgehog Series:

When one thinks of sega, generally the first title that comes to mind is Sonic the Hedgehog. Both consoles had their fair share of Sonic Titles, as you’d imagine, but the saturn didn’t really bring any huge improvement to the series.  Sonic 3D Blast & Sonic R are similar to games from the sega genesis and the sega game gear libraries. The dreamcast however had two new additions into the series with Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure II. The sonic team also created a Mario party clone in sonic shuffle.  Which is a very similar board game style game.

The RPGs:

That said, the Saturn’s library of games has earned an almost mythic status in the retro market due to its abundance of RPGs like Dragon Force, Shining Force III, Albert Odyssey, Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Saga and one of my favorite games Magic Knight Rayearth.  The first Skies of Arcadia was a great RPG on the dreamcast, The Shenmue series is fantastic, Grandia II, and Elemental Gimmick Gear come to mind.

Sports Games:

I do want to mention sports games, because the dreamcast really had some decent games.  2K really created some solid basketball games.  I know sports games are a dime a dozen, but when you do them right, you should be recognized.

So while many Saturn titles have become nostalgic favorites among hardcore gamers, the Dreamcast games continue to offer playable fun to this day. However, the total number of games for the Sega Dreamcast stands at just over 600 compared to over 1100 for the Sega Saturn. When I look at both libraries, to me the dreamcast is the more complete library.  The dreamcast has a  bit of everything in its library: from some great Arcade Games,  Flight Games, 2D Fighting Games, and so on. While both consoles featured some excellent 3d fighters, but I have to go with the dreamcast on this one!

Winner: DreamCast

The hardware: Dreamcast vs Sega Saturn

No surprise here that the Dreamcast offered more powerful overall specs than its predecessor. While the two systems claimed both 3D platform games and nice 2D platformers.  However, It was the Dreamcast’s 128-bit processor that left the Saturn’s 32-bit capabilities in the dust. Add to that the fact the Dreamcast was designed with 3D gaming in mind, and you had a console that delivered very well on this front. Still, anyone who has played a few of the Saturn’s 2D gaming titles, like “Street Fighter Alpha” and “X:Men,” can make a strong argument that this machine’s 2D library was superior. What tips the balance one way or the other is the fact that the Dreamcast utilized Hitachi’s SH4 processor, a PC-powerful chip that hummed along at 200 MHz. The Saturn’s dual VDP chips, on the other hand, simply couldn’t compete.

Winner: Dreamcast

The sound

Right from the get-go, the Sega Saturn was praised for its Yamaha YMF292 dedicated sound card. This custom processor featured a 32-slot sound generator and a 128-step digital signal processor that allowed it, among other things, to create sound mixes and generate digital sound effects. The Dreamcast, by virtue of the fact it was the first of the sixth-gen consoles, had solid sound too, but it didn’t stand out the way the Saturn’s did. The winner here is obvious.

Edge: Saturn

The controller

The controllers for both the Dreamcast and the Saturn play to those consoles’ strengths. ThoseHori Arcade Stick who reveled in mashing circular buttons in the arcade found much to love in the Saturn’s understated 6-button controller. It was perfect for 2D gaming.  If the Saturn analogue controller wasn’t your cup of tee, Hori made some awesome arcade sticks that really are great for that arcade experience. You can still find these today on sites like eBay.

Both consoles had different controller peripherals for each console. Like flight sticks, driving wheels, and light gun blasters.  The light gun on the Saturn was big and bulky, I was always a fan of the more compact light gun for the dreamcast. Sega did make a unique 3d controller just for Nights into Dreams, which had pretty great 3D graphics on the Sega Saturn.

Dreamcast fans, on the other hand, had a modern controller that played to the system’s 3D prowess by offering an analogue controller as well as the standard buttons. The addition of memory card slots allowed Dreamcast gamers to save their progress more efficiently than the Saturn’s internal memory did, or messing with a ram cartridge. For this reason, the Dreamcast has to come out ahead.

Edge: Dreamcast

The console sales Saturn Vs DreamCast

saturn vs dreamcast

High sales don’t always translate to quality. However, there are some passionate forum debates out there weighing the merits of these two systems based on their respective sales figures. Online numbers tend to vary, but official estimates tend to place lifetime sales of the Saturn in the 9.26 million range, while the Dreamcast sold around 9.13 million. But there are ancillary factors to consider as well, such as the fact that the Saturn had a slightly longer shelf life (released in North America in 1995 and discontinued in 1998) than the Dreamcast did (released in 1999 in North America and discontinued in 2001.)

Those who judge these consoles solely based on sales can come to one of two conclusions: that the Dreamcast did better because it virtually tied the Saturn in sales in a slightly shorter timeframe; or the Saturn wins because it (barely) edged out the Dreamcast in overall sales. Since the opportunities to nitpick here are almost endless, we absolve ourselves of any further headaches by simply calling it a push.

Edge: tie

Even while trying to remain impartial, it’s hard to make a fully subjective choice between these two consoles. Much of the choice does come down to personal preference (for games, hardware, controller, etc.), so a truly official winner may never be crowned. This reality seems to have been borne out by the above list, which takes into account a number of criteria yet makes it clear the sleek and powerful Sega Dreamcast matches up equally with the sturdy and game-rich Sega Saturn.
